Binzhou Medical University (BMU) is a public provincial university of applied sciences, co-constructed by Shandong Provincial Education Department and local municipal governments. It is approved as a doctoral degree construction unit by Shandong Province. Its predecessor is the Medical School of Public Shandong University originally established in 1946. In March 1956, the Medical School became independent as Qingdao Medical College and moved to Beizhen, Huimin area in October 1970. In November 1974, Beizhen Branch of Qingdao Medical College was established and in September 1981 it was renamed as Beizhen Medical College. In March 1983, it took on its current name Binzhou Medical University after the name of city it was in. In 2002, Yantai campus was put into use and became the main campus. BMU has combined multiple disciplines of medicine, science, engineering, management and education, with medical disciplines being its advantage and rehabilitation medicine and education for the disabled being its specialties. 

 

School-Running Scale

BMU has over 17,446 full-time students, including over 15,043 undergraduates and junior college students as well as 2,175 postgraduates. The university has enrollment plans in 29 provinces (cities and autonomous regions) and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions of China. So far, it has 228 overseas students. Now the university has 17 schools, namely, School of Marxism, the First School of Clinical Medicine, the Second School of Clinical Medicine, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Special Education and Rehabilitation, School of Stomatology, School of Nursing (School of Gerontology), Teaching Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Health Management, School of International Studies, School of Medical Imaging, School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, School of Gerontology and School of Continuing Education.

 

School-Running Pattern

In recent years, the school-running conditions and the comprehensive competitiveness of BMU have been enhanced, forming a school-running pattern of Two Advantages and Two Features. Two advantage refer to the outstanding advantage of clinical medicine and the advantage of Pharmacy. Clinical Medicine, which focusing on cultivation of “Excellent Doctors” and construction of “New Medicine”, was listed as a featured specialty, as well as a provincial first-class undergraduate program and was listed in the Program Matching Industry Project of Education Serving Transformation of Old and New Growth Drivers in Shandong province. Clinical Medicine discipline is listed as a first-class discipline of Shandong province and high-level discipline construction unit and has entered 3‰ in ESI ranking. Pharmacy which adhering to the road of production-education-research-application integration, is listed as a first-class program of Shandong province and key supporting program by provincial finance. The Rongchang Industry Institute co-constructed by BMU and Rongchang Pharmaceuticals was included in the list of the first batch of Shandong modern industry institute, undertaking national and provincial special project on significant new drugs development and provincial special project on self-independent innovation and achievements commercialization. BMU also co-constructed a provincial key laboratory of Meteria Medica Modernization and New Dosage Form Development with Xianglong Group. The discipline of Pharmacy was selected as the nurturing target for high-level discipline in Shandong province and the Pharmacology and Toxicology discipline has entered 7‰ in ESI ranking. The discipline of Chemistry has entered 1% in ESI ranking. Two Features refers to higher education for the disabled and rehabilitation medicine. In 1985, Binzhou Medical University started the first undergraduate program in China that was especially designed for the disabled, which marked the beginning of medical education for the disabled in China. In 2012, the university took the initiative to recruit students with visual impairment to take part in a five-year program of Acupuncture and Massotherapy and in 2018, the university started to recruit students with hearing impairment, which filled in the gaps of undergraduate programs of students with visual or hearing impairment among medical universities. Over 30 years' development, BMU has created its own model of teaching the disabled and healthy students together, combining teaching and rehabilitation in the education for the disabled students and putting knowledge into practice for talent cultivation of the the disabled and has cultivated 1,300 disabled medical graduates. In the meanwhile, BMU, as one of the five earliest universities opening Prosthetics and Orthotics engineering program in China, has been working hard on the innovative development of higher education on rehabilitation medicine, forming a Great Rehabilitation system integrated by Rehabilitation Therapy, Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation, Applied Psychology, Rehabilitation of Physical Therapy Direction, Rehabilitation of Occupational Therapy Direction and Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering. Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation program has reached national first-rate level. Now, BMU serves as the National Higher Education Basis for the Disabled, the Standardized Training Basis for Blind Massotherapy and Standardized Training Basis for Rehabilitation Physician.

 

Talents Cultivation

BMU insists on taking high moral value establishment in talent cultivation as the fundamental task and setting talent cultivation as the working center. BMU puts into practices its university dictum of “benevolent and skillful”, promotes its school spirit of “factualism, solidarity, preciseness and innovation,” and practices its teaching spirit of “imparting knowledge and cultivating people, serving as role models, adopting rigorous scholarship and dedicating to teaching” and its learning spirit of “advocating science, seeking the truth, studying diligently and keeping faith”. Over the past 40 years, BMU has made positive contributions to society and our country by cultivating more than 186,000 talents in medicine and medicine-related fields, who have become great academics, leading figures and elites in the fields and primary medical staffs, such as Prof. Meng Xiangjin, who is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences. 

 

Education and Teaching

We have 13 national first-class courses, 48 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, four provincial teaching demonstration centers, three provincial demonstration practice training bases and one provincial talents cultivation innovation experimental zone. The university has undertaken one New Liberal Arts Research and Reform Practice Program by Ministry of Education, 225 Industry-university Cooperative Education Projects, 81 provincial teaching reform programs and education sciences planning programs, won one national teaching achievements award, 23 provincial teaching achievements awards, including one special prize and eight first prizes. It owns one second prize of First National Textbooks Construction Award, one 14th five-year national planned textbook on vocational education among the first batch, six First-Class Textbooks of Higher Education of Shandong Province and two 14th five-year provincial planned textbooks on vocational education among the first batch. BMU gained excellent results in the national undergraduate teaching level assessment in 2006 and passed the national undergraduate teaching evaluation in 2016. BMU firstly gained national accreditation of Medical Education among Shandong universities with six years validity in 2013 and was approved to extend certification period to ten years. In 2022, the Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering Programme was accredited by ISPO, with three years of validity. In 2016, BMU passed the national undergraduate teaching evaluation. BMU is one of universities to held the Clinical and Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner Qualification Examination and is among the first batch of pilot units carrying out the comprehensive reform on undergraduate programs in the Teaching Projects for Undergraduates of the Ministry of Education. BMU is also the pilot unit of 5+3 education comprehensive reform on clinical medicine in the Plan of Educating and Training Outstanding Doctors and the pilot unit of reform on the Plan of Educating and Training for Traditional Chinese Medicine Outstanding Doctors. Now, BMU serves as the standardized training basis for residents (including dental residents and TCM residents) at national level, the training basis for nursing talents and clinical pharmacists and the cultivation basis for general practitioners.

 

Discipline and Specialty

BMU has 31 undergraduate programs, including Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Pediatrics, Nursing, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Therapy, Special Education, Bio-pharmaceuticals and Intelligent Medical Engineering. Among them,90% are first-class programs at provincial or above level. Clinical Medicine, Stomatology and Nursing are national first-class undergraduate program construction unit, Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Nursing and Biotechnology are national characteristic programs and the program groups of Clinical Medicine, Medical Imaging, Pharmacy and TCM are high-level application-oriented program construction groups. BMU has six master’s degree programs at first-level disciplines and ten professional master’s degree programs. There are three disciplines have entered 1‰ in ESI ranking. Clinical Medicine, Basic Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing have been ranked top 50% of the GDI College First-Class Discipline Ranking List. Besides, BMU has been listed as category A universities by Shanghai Ranking. There are two national key clinical specialties, 33 provincial key clinical specialties and five key disciplines belonging to directly affiliated hospitals.

 

Scientific Research 

BMU is one of the scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases for Shandong universities. Over the past 5 years, BMU has been responsible for over 1,400 research projects, including 113 NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) projects, 4 SSFC (National Social Science Fund of China) projects, 322 projects at ministerial and provincial-level. The university’s scientific and technological achievements won 32 ministerial and provincial-level awards, including six first prizes. There are one key laboratory of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, several centers and laboratories including three provincial engineering research centers, one provincial technology innovation center, one provincial-municipal Shandong key laboratory nurturing base, one provincial university humanities research base and 43 bureau level research platforms. More than 4950 papers that were published on SCI, CSSCI and Chinese core journals and so on, among which 14 papers are published on Nature, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and Cell. The university has 360 patents, including 280 patents for invention. BMU participated the R&D process of China’s first domestically developed Disitamab vedotin, an original ADC anticancer drugs, which is approved for the market. Binzhou Medical University currently edits and publishes two academic journals: Chinese Journal of Hospital Statistics and Journal of Binzhou Medical University, both journals are published home and abroad.

 

Teaching Faculty

There are altogether 11,350 faculty members working in Binzhou Medical University and its five affiliated hospitals. Among the faculty members, 2370 have senior professional titles and 3574 have medical practitioner qualifications. BMU now has one Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 12 Specially invited Academicians, four of which are foreigners, four talents of national level and six “National Renowned Teachers”. The University also enjoys four Talents in the New Century of the Ministry of Education, nine experts enjoy the use of the State Council Special Allowance, 21 “Tai Shan Scholar Distinguished Professor, 18 “Tai Shan Scholar Young Expert, five Tai Shan Industry leading Talent, eight young and middle-age experts with special contributions at provincial level, one chief experts of key disciplines and nine provincial renowned teachers. There are one national Huang Danian style teaching team, three provincial Huang Danian style teaching teams, five provincial teaching teams and one provincial scientific innovation team.

 

School Facilities

BMU has two campuses, Yantai Campus and Binzhou Campus, covering a total area of 1600 mu (1 mu equates 1/15 hectare) and a total building area of 780,000 square meters. Its national owned assets reach RMB 1.895 billion yuan, and the value of teaching and research facilities reaches RMB 541 million yuan. The university library has over 1.7 million volume of paper collection and 4.19 million volume of electronic collection. At present, the university has five directly affiliated hospitals. Binzhou Medical University Hospital is a regional medical center at provincial level with a scheduled hospital beds of 2,852. Yantai affiliated hospital of BMU is the first large-scale Level-3 Grade A general hospital in Yantai-Weihai region with a scheduled hospital beds of 1,500. Yantai Shan Hospital of BMU (China-France Friendship Hospital) is one of the earliest western medicine hospitals in China, which has a scheduled hospital beds of 2106. Yantai Stomatological Hospital of BMU is a Grade A specialized hospital with 260 comprehensive dental treatment chairs and 50 hospital beds. Binzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of BMU is a regional medical center in Shandong, with 821 scheduled beds. BMU enjoys 9 indirectly affiliated hospitals, 35 teaching hospitals, 228 teaching and practicing bases.

 

Exchanges and Cooperation

BMU has established friendly ties and cooperation with international and domestic higher education and medical institutions, namely, The University of Tennessee, Canterbury Christ Church University, German University of Health and Sport, Uppsala University, Vitebsk State Order of People’s Friendship Medical University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University, Science for Life Laboratory, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and major pharmaceutical companies, namely, MEBO Company, Ottobock (China), Rongchang Pharmaceuticals and Shandong International Biotechnology Park. Considerable achievements have been made in terms of educational resources sharing, visiting scholars exchanges, research programs, joint education program and collaborative innovation.
