Song Xiaodong, PhD, Professor of Genetics

Prof. Song enjoys the Special Government Allowance of the State Council. She is awarded the Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Yantai City and Shandong Province, and Young and Middle-aged Leading Teachers in Shandong Institution of Higher Learning. She used to be a visiting scholar of Fox Chase Cancer Center, USA.

Teaching Experiences

Prof. Song has been teaching “Molecular Cell Biology”, “Medical Cell Biology” and “Medical Genetics”, focusing on the integration of scientific research outcome into teaching. She can also keep up with the scientific and technological progress as well as social needs to spread the power of science in plain language, holding lectures on popular science, such as Being Not Able to Tell Apart What the Cytokine Storm in COVID-19 Is. In the teaching, she focuses on cultivating students' innovation, thinking and practical ability, and many students have been awarded titles of Outstanding Dissertation and selected in the National University Student Innovation Program.

In her 29 years of educational work, Prof. Song has never forgotten the original intention of imparting knowledge and educating students, scientific research, and serving the society in higher education, integrated the concept of educating people into her work. In combination with her visiting experience in the United States, Song held a lecture on Gone with the wind--From American dream to Chinese dream, letting ideological and political education shine in the school. During the coronavirus epidemic, Song realized the value of human community with a shared future in Korea and held a lecture on Human Community with a Shared Future from the Perspective of the Coronavirus Epidemic to educate students that we cannot escape fighting for the people! We cannot escape serving our country! We cannot escape the entrusting with a mission at a critical and difficult moment! During the fight against the coronavirus, many students represented Shandong to assist Hubei, one of whom was awarded as a National Advanced Worker.

Scientific Research

The main research direction of Prof. Song is the regulatory mechanism of non-coding RNAs in the pulmonary fibrosis and their pharmacological intervention, which was highly evaluated by the British and German scientists jointly in the top international journal Physiol Rev (IF:37.312), and by several teams such as Yang in Ageing Res Rev (IF:10.895) and other journals as the first international team to study the role of lncRNAs in pulmonary fibrosis and their mechanisms, and to search for molecular markers and intervention targets for pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis and prognosis of disease in lncRNAs. Her paper reported in 2014, The Regulatory Mechanisms of lncRNA-mediated Coding and Non-coding Genes in Pulmonary Fibrosis, was cited 158 times at the end of June 2021, and had been awarded High Impact Respiratory Academic Paper at the National Respiratory Annual Meeting presided by Wang Chen and academician Zhong Nanshan in 2020.

Recognition and Awards

In recent years, Prof. Song has won two second prizes and one first prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Shandong; presided over and undertaken 12 National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 20 Key R&D Programs of Shandong and National Natural Science Foundation of Shandong; published more than 30 SCI papers in international journals such as “Mol Ther” (IF:11.454) as the first or corresponding author, with a total of 1500+ citations. She was granted four invention patents. Prof. Song has supervised 10 postgraduates who have been awarded national scholarships and four who have been awarded the honorary title of Shandong Outstanding Students.
