Shandong Medical and Pharmaceutical University(SDMPU) is a public provincial university of applied sciences, co-constructed by Shandong Provincial Education Department and local municipal governments. It has been granted the approval to be a doctoral degree-conferring institute by Shandong Province. Its predecessor is the Medical School of National Shandong University originally established in 1946. In March 1956, the Medical School became independent as Qingdao Medical College and moved to Beizhen, Huimin area in October 1970. In November 1974, Beizhen Branch of Qingdao Medical College was established and in September 1981 it was renamed as Beizhen Medical College. In March 1983, it took on its former name Binzhou Medical University after the name of city it was in. It was renamed Shandong Medical and Pharmaceutical University in March 2026. Now, SDMPU enjoys two campus in Yantai and Binzhou. SDMPU has combined multiple disciplines of medicine, science, management, engineering and education, with medicine and pharmacy disciplines being its advantages and the higher education for the disabled and rehabilitation medicine being its features.

Enrollment 

SDMPU has over 16,700 full-time students, including over 14,200 undergraduates and 2,500 postgraduates. The university has enrollment plans in 31 provinces (cities and autonomous regions) and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions of China. So far, it has over 150 overseas students and over 9,000 students of continuing education. Now the university has 17 schools, namely, School of Marxism, the First School of Clinical Medicine, the Second School of Clinical Medicine, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Special Education and Rehabilitation, School of Stomatology, School of Nursing , Teaching Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Health Management, School of International Studies, School of Medical Imaging, School of Continuing Education, School of Gerontology and School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

School Development Structure

In recent years, the school development structure and the comprehensive competitiveness of SDMPU have been enhanced, forming a school development structure of “Two Advantages and Two Features”. “Two Advantages” refers to the outstanding advantage of clinical medicine and Pharmacy. Clinical Medicine, which focusing on the development of “New Medicine”, is selected to be a national first-class undergraduate program at national level and it is a national featured program. Clinical Medicine is also listed in the Program Matching Industry Project of Education Serving Transformation of Old and New Growth Drivers in Shandong province. Clinical Medicine discipline is selected to be a first-class discipline and a high-level discipline of Shandong province and has entered 3‰ in ESI ranking. Pharmacy, which adhering to the road of production-education-research-application integration, was selected to be a first-class program of Shandong province and a key supporting program by provincial finance. The Rongchang Industry Institute co-constructed by SDMPU and Rongchang Pharmaceuticals was included in the list of the first batch of Shandong modern industry institute, undertaking national and provincial special project on significant new drugs development and provincial special project on self-independent innovation and achievements commercialization. SDMPU also co-constructed a provincial key laboratory of “TCM Pharmocology Modernization and New Dosage Form Development” with Xianglong Group. The discipline of Pharmacy was selected to be a high-level discipline in Shandong province and the Pharmacology and Toxicology discipline has entered 5‰ in ESI ranking. The discipline of Chemistry has entered 7% in ESI ranking. The discipline of Biology and Biochemistry has entered 1%. “Two Features” refers to the higher education for the disabled and rehabilitation medicine. In 1985, SDMPU started the first undergraduate program in China that was especially designed for the disabled, which marked the beginning of medical education for the disabled in China. In 2012, the university took the initiative to recruit students with visual impairment and in 2018, the university started to recruit students with hearing impairment, which filled in the gaps of undergraduate programs of students with visual or hearing impairment among medical universities. In nearly 40 years' development, SDMPU has created its own model of teaching the disabled and healthy students together, combining teaching and rehabilitation in the education for the disabled students and putting knowledge into practice for talent cultivation of the disabled and has cultivated 1,343 disabled medical graduates, making positive contributions for our country’s development. SDMPU has been working hard on the innovative development of higher education on rehabilitation medicine, forming a domestically advanced and provincially comprehensive “Great Rehabilitation” system with the collaborative development of medicine, teaching and rehabilitation. Now, SDMPU serves as the National Higher Education Basis for the Disabled, the Standardized Training Basis for Blind Medical Massage and Standardized Training Basis for Rehabilitation Physician with the honorable titles of “National Advanced unit for Helping Persons with Disabilities” and “National Advanced Unit for Special Education”.

Talent Cultivation

SDMPU insists on taking high moral value establishment in talent cultivation as the fundamental task and setting talent cultivation as the working center. SDMPU puts into practices its university dictum of “benevolent and skillful”, promotes its school spirit of “factualism, solidarity, preciseness and innovation,” and practices its teaching spirit of “imparting knowledge and cultivating people, serving as role models, adopting rigorous scholarship and dedicating to teaching” and its learning spirit of “advocating science, seeking the truth, studying diligently and keeping faith”. Over the past 50 years, SDMPU has made positive contributions to society and our country by cultivating more than 200,000 talents in medicine and medicine-related fields, who have become great academics, leading figures and elites in the fields and primary medical staffs and are known for their “pragmatic style, solid foundation and diligent work ethic”, such as Prof. Meng Xiangjin, who is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences. 

Education and Teaching

We have 18 national first-class courses, 48 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, four provincial teaching demonstration centers, three provincial demonstration practice training bases and one provincial talents cultivation innovation experimental zone. In the past five years, SDMPU has undertaken one New Liberal Arts Research and Reform Practice Program by Ministry of Education, 259 Industry-university Cooperative Education Projects, 112 provincial teaching reform programs and education sciences planning programs, won 39 awards above provincial level, including 4 national teaching achievements award, 3 provincial special prize and 12 provincial first prizes. SDMPU owns 3 second prize of First National Textbooks Construction Award, one 14th five-year national planned textbook on vocational education among the first batch, 9 First-Class Textbooks of Higher Education of Shandong Province and two 14th five-year provincial planned textbooks on vocational education among the first batch. SDMPU gained excellent results in the national undergraduate teaching level assessment in 2006 and passed the national undergraduate teaching evaluation in 2016. Pass the new round of Undergraduate Education and Teaching Review and Assessment by the Ministry of Education in 2025. It is among the first batch of pilot institutions carrying out the comprehensive reform on undergraduate programs in the Teaching Projects for Undergraduates of the Ministry of Education and is approved to be the institution of reform on the Plan of Educating and Training for Outstanding Doctors (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Now, SDMPU serves as the standardized training basis for residents (including dental residents and TCM residents) at national level, the training basis for nursing talents and clinical pharmacists and the cultivation basis for general practitioners.

Discipline and Specialty

SDMPU has 32 undergraduate programs, including Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Nursing, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Therapy, Bio-pharmaceuticals and Intelligent Medical Engineering. Among them, 25 are first-class programs at provincial or above level and 24 are on the list of 2025 Chinese programs ranking by Shanghai Ranking. Clinical Medicine, Stomatology and Nursing were selected to be national first-class undergraduate program, Clinical Medicine, Stomatology and Nursing and Biotechnology are national characteristic programs and the program groups of Clinical Medicine, Medical Imaging, Pharmacy and TCM were selected to be high-level application-oriented program groups. SDMPU firstly gained national accreditation of Medical Education among Shandong universities with six years validity in 2013 and was approved to extend certification period to ten years in 2020. In 2022, the Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering Programme was accredited by ISPO, with three years of validity. In 2024, the Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Programme was accredited by WP, with five years of validity. In 2025, Higher Education Quality Certification for International Students in China was obtained, with a validity period of 4 years. The Major of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering passed the ISPO international re-certification, with a validity period of 4 years. SDMPU has eight first-level disciplines conferring master’s degree and 11 professional master’s degree programs. Five disciplines of SDMPU ranked top 1‰ in ESI ranking. Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing ranked top 50% of the 2024 Chinese Best Programs by Shanghai Ranking. Besides, SDMPU ranks 26 in the 2025 Chinese Universities in Medicine and Pharmacy fields by Shanghai Ranking. There are 5 national key clinical specialties, 49 provincial key clinical specialties and ten key disciplines belonging to directly affiliated hospitals.

Scientific Research 

SDMPU is one of the scientific and technological achievements commercialization and technology transfer bases for Shandong universities and is approved to be a comprehensive unit of technological achievements commercialization in Shandong province. Over the past 5 years, SDMPU has been responsible for over 1,700 research projects. It has won 25 provincial and ministerial-level or higher scientific research awards and 30 scientific research awards from national-level societies (associations) such as the Chinese Medical Association. It has 1 key research laboratory of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 19 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research platforms, and 58 scientific research platforms at the department and bureau level. SDMPU participated the R&D process of China’s first domestically developed Disitamab vedotin, an original ADC anticancer drugs, which is approved for the market and currently edits and publishes two academic journals: Chinese Journal of Hospital Statistics and Journal of Shandong Medical and Pharmaceutical University, both journals are published home and abroad.

Teaching Faculty

There are altogether 11,963 faculty members working in Shandong Medical and Pharmaceutical University and its affiliated hospitals. Among the faculty members, 3,123 have senior professional titles. SDMPU now has 29 national level talents, such as Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 “National Renowned Teachers”. There are 117 Taishan Scholars and other provincial-level talents, 12 provincial-level teaching masters, and 3 members of the sixth batch of National Outstanding Clinical Talents in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Besides, there are 1 national Huang Danian style teaching team, 3 provincial Huang Danian style teaching teams, five provincial teaching teams and 55 provincial scientific research team.

Facilities and Resources

SDMPU covers an area of 164.6 acres, with a total building floor area of 779,500 square meters. Its fixed assets are valued at RMB 2.88 billion, including teaching and research equipment worth RMB 568 million. The library holds over 1.8 million print books and more than 4.2 million e-books. There are 184 practice teaching bases, including 5 directly affiliated Class A Tertiary hospitals and 9 non-directly affiliated hospitals. Shandong Medical and Pharmaceutical University Hospital serves as a Regional Medical Center in Shandong Province, with 2,852 approved beds. Yantai Affiliated Hospital is the first provincial-level large Class A Tertiary general hospital in the Yantai-Weihai region, with 1,500 approved beds. Affiliated Yantaishan Hospital is one of the earliest Western medicine hospitals in China, with 3,016 approved beds. Affiliated Yantai Stomatological Hospital is a Class A Tertiary dental specialty hospital, equipped with 430 dental chairs and 60 approved beds. Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital is a Regional Traditional Chinese Medicine Medical Center in Shandong Province, with 821 approved beds.

Exchanges and Cooperation

SDMPU has successfully held two Joint Education Programs for undergraduates, including Sino-german Rehabilitation Therapy, Sino-Russian Applied Psychology. It has established friendly ties and cooperation with international and domestic higher education and medical institutions, namely, California State University, Los Angeles, The University of Canterbury, New Zealand, German Sports and Health University, University of Southern Denmark, Tver State University, Russia, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and major pharmaceutical companies, namely, MEBO Company, Ottobock (China), Rongchang Pharmaceuticals and Shandong International Biotechnology Park. Besides, SDMPU has joined 6 international cooperation alliances including the Belt and Road and has established 10 international cooperation platforms including SDMPU & Karolinska Institute International Innovation Center and Cultural Exchange Base with Chinese Medicine Characteristics between SDMPU and UTAR. Considerable achievements have been made in terms of educational resources sharing, visiting scholars exchanges, research programs, joint education program and collaborative innovation.
