Recently, the 2022 China Undergraduate Life Sciences Contest (CUSLC) was successfully concluded. Students from Binzhou Medical University (BMU) won one first prize, two second prizes, and five third prizes in the scientific research category and two second prizes and two third prizes in the innovation and entrepreneurship category, the highest level and number of awards received at the competition in BMU's history.
In the scientific research category, Du Maoru, Sheng Wenxue, Lu Zhaochen, and Yang Jingnan won first prize for the project "Study of Effect and Mechanism of Oxygen Therapy in Enhancing Efficacy of Selenocystine in Treating Hypoxic Tumors" supervised by Pan Xiaohong, a teacher from the School of Pharmacy (School of Enology) of BMU; Pei Qingyan, Zhu Tonghao, Lu Yunxia, and Liu Yuanyu won second prize for the project "Study on Effect of PEPC Overexpression on ε-Polylysine Metabolism in Streptomyces Albicans" supervised by Qin Jiayang and Wang Xiuwen; Yu Silin, Yan Wenjing, Wu Diange, Gao Ying, and Wang Ruochen won second prize for the project "Exploring the Mechanism of AC9 in Regulating Blood Glucose Homeostasis with Islet α Cell Specific AC9 Knockout Mice as Model" supervised by Zhu Yanping; Zhu Shihui, Li Zonglin, Li Xiaolong, Li Zekun, and Ban Chao won third prize for the project "Effect of Small Molecular Peptide TAT-MAS9C on Protective Effect of Ang-(1-7)-Mas Mediated Cerebral Ischemia" supervised by Bian Weihua; Dai Wenjuan, Wu Mengru, Cai Qinghao, and Wang Yifan won third prize for the project "Study on Heterologous Expression of NADP-dependent GAPDH in Streptomyces Albicans and Its Effect on ε-polylysine Metabolism" supervised by Kong Linghui and Qin Jiayang; Wang Zhanzhan, Liu Qingze, Zhao Hongzhang, and Zhang Shiwei won third prize for the project "Study on Effect of Heterologous Expression of Aspartate Dehydrogenase on ε-polylysine Metabolism in Streptomyces Albicans" supervised by Wang Xiuwen and Xu Weina. In the innovation and entrepreneurship category, Xue Tong, Zhang Wenjing, and Chen Wentao won second prize for the project "Design, Activity Evaluation, and Synergistic Antibacterial Effect of Antibacterial Peptides with Low Toxicity and High-Efficiency Rupture Activity" surprised by Wei Guangcheng; Zhang Mengzhi, Chen Qian, and Zhao Xilei won second prize for the project "Design and Synthesis of Anticancer Peptides with Low Hemolysis, High Membrane Permeability, and Analgesic Activity and Study of Their Synergistic Anticancer Effect" supervised by Yan Miaomiao; Li Qian, Li Zhaokun, Li Qianqian, Wei Jianwei, Yao Chuanjie, and Liu Xiaoyu won third prize for the project "Efficient Utilization of Winter Jujube Produced in Binzhou" supervised by Liu Desheng; Yang Xia, Zhang Jiangping, Li Zhijie, Wang Mengting, Zhao Zongjie, and Dong Wenkai won third prize for the project "Ginseng Vinegar: Leading Practice of American Ginseng Recycling" supervised by Lin Ying and Gao Jiajia.
CUSLC is a national competition for college students, covering the fields of life sciences, such as biology, food, medicine, pharmacy, agronomy, and environment. It is one of the 57 national undergraduate discipline-specific competitions officially recognized by the Ministry of Education for its authoritativeness and importance. The competition presents awards in two categories: scientific research and innovation and entrepreneurship, aiming at guiding and encouraging college students to seek truth from facts, study hard and be brave in innovation, cultivating students' innovative ability, scientific research quality, and comprehensive skills, and improving the quality of education of life science professionals in higher education institutions.
