Recently, the list of 2022 “Star of Chinese College Students’ Self-Improvement”, co-organized by China Youth Daily, New Oriental Education & Technology Group Inc., and China Foundation for Youth Entrepreneurship and Employment with the instruction of the Communist Youth League of China Central Committee and All-China Students’ Federation, was announced. Feng Lingquan, a student enrolled in 2021 majoring in Stomatology Technology (hearing impairment) of School of Special Education, was awarded the title of “Star of Chinese College Students’ Self-Improvement”.
Feng Lingquan was diagnosed with hereditary neurodeafness from birth, and both of his parents were hearing impaired. He can’t hear or speak, and his world is silent. However, he still feels lucky and don’t feel inferior. He always believes he was born in a beautiful world and had a happy childhood. With his own efforts and the support of his parents, he was successfully admitted to Binzhou Medical University and became a student majoring in Stomatology Technology.
Feng Lingquan is diligent and hardworking. During his time at MBU, he got the first-class university scholarship, won the second place in Shandong Province Disabled Curling Competition and the third place in Zhejiang Province Disabled Curling Competition, and successfully established two projects in China College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. He devoted himself to public welfare, and became a nucleic acid sampler during the covid-19 pandemic, overcoming many hardships; he was self-reliant and has done a number of part-time jobs, such as a tally clerk and a sign language teacher. Talking about his work experiences, he said: “These experiences made me realize the difficulties of various occupations, especially the healthcare workers. At the same time, I can help special groups through my own sign language teaching, which not only increases social experience, but also proves myself and lays a solid foundation for entering society in the future.”
The 2022 “Star of Chinese College Students’ Self-improvement” Scholarship Evaluation, themed “Forging Ahead with Enterprise and Fortitude”, aimed to set up role models among contemporary college students who love the motherland, develop good moral character, are not afraid of difficulties and are self-reliant. After the recommendation of universities, provincial preliminary evaluation, national evaluation and other sessions, ten students were awarded the scholarship of “ Model Star of Chinese College Students’ Self-Improvement” and 1850 students were awarded the scholarship of “Star of Chinese College Students’ Self-Improvement ”.
The activity of the national search for the “Star of Self-improvement of Chinese College Students” has been launched since 2007, and has been held for 16 consecutive years with annual selection.
