As the stars guide unwavering travelers, behind our remarkable achievements are tireless efforts. The passing year of 2023 was extremely important in the Party and the nation's history, as it was the opening year of fully implementing the guiding principles of the Party's 20th National Congress. It was also an extraordinarily unusual year in BMU's history. In the past year, by remembering General Secretary Xi Jinping's exhortations, demonstrating gratitude, and forging ahead, the university made a series of breakthroughs in high-quality development and a series of landmark achievements, writing a brilliant chapter on building a high-level medical university in an all-round way.
In the past year, we dedicated our energy and expertise, prepared for the grand events, and crafted a compelling vision for building a high-level medical university in an all-round way. The 5th BMU Congress of Party Representatives of CPC was held successfully, raising high the banner, pooling strength, and uniting for advancement. It thoroughly reviewed achievements in various undertakings over the past five years, scientifically analyzed opportunities and challenges facing the university, established the 1-3-5-6-9 strategy, clarified major goals, development strategies, and tasks for the next five years and an even longer term, outlined new blueprints for the university's development, and charted the pathway forward and action plan for building a high-level medical university in an all-round way on the new journey in the new era.
In the past year, we held high the banner to forge our minds, made progress through learning together, and wrote a new chapter on high-quality development driven by high-quality Party building. Guided by the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, we thoroughly studied and implemented the guiding principles of the Party's 20th National Congress, meticulously carried out education on the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, earnestly implemented requirements for Party building and the Party's organizational pathway in a new era, strengthened the accountability system for ideological work, advanced comprehensive strict governance of the Party in depth, effectively enhanced leading, guiding, organizing and mobilizing strengths at all levels of Party organizations, and made steady progress in technology and education integration and cultivation of talents with high qualities of innovation and practicing in Party building and other tasks.
In the past year, we improved governance and performance, demonstrating our dedication, and maintained a robust impetus for high-quality development. The reforms for establishing a university-school administrative structure were further deepened; the hospital-education-research model became more mature; high-quality development endeavors advanced onto higher levels; university-running mechanisms were better streamlined, with the two campuses' functions getting more complete. The university kicked off the change and apportionment of the intermediate management leaders and urged Party members and cadres to dramatically enhance abilities and transform work styles, providing strong organizational safeguards for the steady long-term development of our undertakings.
In the past year, we remained true to our original aspiration, devoted ourselves to talent development, and handed in a satisfactory answer sheet in performing the fundamental task of cultivating morality and integrity. The university delivered education on the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era among members of the Communist Youth League of China and young students and articulated the Party's innovative theories in the youth's language. We steadily advanced the Six Projects on student affairs and Excellence Initiative to improve the study style of students. One student from BMU was named Star of Self-improvement of Chinese College Students, and our overall passing rate on the second-tier Traditional Chinese Medicine Competency Test ranked first among peers nationwide. In the past year, we had 11 additional national first-class undergraduate courses, created three Outstanding Ideological and Political Education Case Studies for Yellow River Major National Strategy Courses, and won one national second prize at the Youth Teacher Competition and one at the National Teaching Innovation Contest for College Teachers. The 2.5+2.5 teaching model reforms were fully implemented for four specialties in seven affiliated hospitals. We successfully applied for 68 industry-university collaborative education projects and 82 national innovation and entrepreneurship projects sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The university was also named a Specialized and Innovative Industry Institute by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
In the past year, we persevered with unwavering determination in taking solid steps in disciplinary development and scientific and technological self-reliance. The university's Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology, and Toxicology ranked among the top 3.069‰ and 7.18‰ in the ESI global rankings, and its Chemistry entering the ESI top 1%. Four disciplines entered the top 50% in the Best Chinese Subjects Rankings in 2023 by Shanghai Ranking. Our V-formation disciplinary development system kept improving. We had two additional national key specialty construction projects, and we selected four doctoral supervisors and trained doctoral students jointly with partners. We successfully applied for 26 National Natural Science Foundation projects and initiated 56 horizontal projects, and both the number of projects and funding for these projects set new highs. Eight provincial/ministerial scientific research platforms were newly built, including a Shandong Provincial Engineering Research Center, alongside two Shandong Provincial Higher Education Institution International Joint Labs. The university received four provincial/ministerial science and technology awards, and our researchers published over 1,100 high-level SCI/CSSCI and other indexed papers, including two in top international journals.
In the past year, we focused on introducing and cultivating talent to burnish our brand as a powerhouse of talent. The university cultivated one nationally recognized talent and seven provincial key talents and attracted one provincial/ministerial talent and 48 high-level Ph.D. holders. We obtained approval for one Shandong Overseas High-level Talent Scientific Research Platform, one provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Top Talent Academic Leader Cultivation Project, and one Case by Case Top Talent Introduction Project in Yantai. We had one additional Shandong Huang Dayan Teacher Team by thoroughly implementing the 5 Projects on teacher ethics and teaching style improvement.
In the past year, we blazed a trail of open and integrated development by leveraging our unique features and strengths. We actively drove the development of the Yellow River Basin Ecological Health Research Institute, kept strengthening the development of the Yellow River Delta Regional Medical Center, earnestly participated in the development of the Shandong Pilot Green Low-Carbon High-quality Development Zone, and continued the building of a provincial green education establishment. The university coordinated the implementation of the cooperation memorandum of understanding between the provincial Department of Education and the municipal government, and the university-city co-development agreement. We participated in establishing the Shandong Industry-University Integration Consortium for Medical Care and Health, and co-founded the Yantai Life Science and Health Research Institute, Yantai Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Innovation Institute, and Preventive Medicine Research Institute in collaboration with government departments and businesses. We signed strategic cooperation agreements with Muping District of Yantai City and Junxiu Biotech. We improved operation mechanisms for the Sino-German cooperative education project and reached a letter of intent on the cooperation with Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Malaysia to offer Traditional Chinese Medicine courses. We carried out over ten public welfare projects, which benefited over 5,000 people. We actively provided assistance in foreign countries, Qinghai, and Chongqing, as well as assistance projects of Specialized Hospital Deans Famous Physician Studios, Four Access task forces, and more. One of our employees was named National Advanced Individual in Foreign Medical Aid.
In the past year, we consolidated foundations to improve the well-being of the public by putting people first and providing wholehearted service. We facilitated the construction of the Stomatology Building, continuously improved supporting facilities for the Rehabilitation Zone and Industry-University-Research Collaboration Zone as well as the 5G network ecosystem, and deepened the two-way integration of smart campus and smart education development. The university was included in the first batch of National Healthy Campus Construction Units and won the title of Shandong Star Canteen. The university kept improving its software and hardware, and the students and staff had a strong sense of gain, happiness, and security.
No matter how long the journey is, we measure it by our steps. Looking back at 2023, the whole university worked with one heart and one mind. Images bearing witness to vigorous efforts, memories etched in our hearts, and batches of astonishing data all relive the glorious course of the BMU people's unwavering pursuit of excellence. At the heart of our achievements lies the selfless commitment of our esteemed faculty, diligent students, compassionate medical staff, and dedicated workers, alongside caring support and tremendous help from alumni and friends from all walks of life! We extend our deepest respects and heartfelt gratitude to all who have contributed to our shared success.
The wind is strong, and the waves are high. It is time to hoist our sails and break through the horizon. With a weight of responsibility upon our shoulders and a long road ahead, let us harness the power of collective action to achieve excellence. The coming 2024 is the most crucial year for fully implementing the spirit of the Party's 20th National Congress, the year for sprint to attain development objectives and tasks in the 14th Five-Year Plan, the first year of engagement as BMU strides toward building a high-level medical university comprehensively, and above all the year of progress by competing with each other. Standing at a new historical juncture, we will be guided by the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, bear in mind the national interests, brave our historical mission, forge ahead more firmly on the road of high-quality intrinsic development, and concentrate more on BMU's development priorities. We must work hard in a down-to-earth manner with determination to turn our blueprint into reality, full confidence in carrying on our efforts and forging ahead valiantly, and perseverance to achieve our goals. We shall demonstrate fresh resolve and accomplishments in building a high-level medical university through the new phase and work together to develop, deliver, and strive for a better future for BMU!
