The School of Special Education and Rehabilitation was established in October 2023, which is an important move of the university to strengthen the university development structure of “two advantages and two features” and to promote the high-quality development of “great rehabilitation”. It is formed through the integration of the former School of Special Education, the School of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Department of Psychology of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.


The predecessor of the School is the Second Department of Clinical Medicine, which was founded in 1985. It is the first to start the undergraduate program especially designed for students with physical impairments, which marked the beginning of medical education for the disabled in China. In 2012, it begins to recruit students with visual impairment and in 2018, it begins to recruit students with hearing impairments. At present, education for the disabled and rehabilitation medicine are an essential support for the university development structure. Whats more, the School is a member of the Shandong Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. Through the exploration of the past four decades, it has formed its own model of teaching the disabled and healthy students together and combining teaching and rehabilitation in the education for the disabled students. An collaborative development structure of medicine, education and rehabilitation has formed by the education of the disabled, education serving cause of the disabled and the education of cultivating talents of rehabilitation medicine.


The School has 10 undergraduate programs, namely Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture and Massotherapy) (visually impaired), Stomatology Technology (hearing impaired), Special Education, Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Therapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering, Rehabilitation Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation Therapy (Sino-German joint education program) and Applied Psychology. Also, it has five master’s degree programs, including Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiotherapy (academic and professional), Rehabilitation Therapy Technology, Medical Psychology as well as Applied Psychology.


The School of Special Education and Rehabilitation enjoys a strong faculty team with 93 faculty members, including 11 professors and 28 associate professors. Among the faculty members, 38 are doctors, 4 are doctoral candidates and 71 are master supervisors. The faculty provides a strong guarantee for the School to improve the quality of talent cultivation and the ability of scientific and technological innovation.


Located in the national-level Demonstration Park for Special Education, it has over 50 learning supportive platforms and practical teaching platforms, such as Braille Library, 3D Digital Oral Practice Teaching Center, Auditory Speech Function Assessment and Rehabilitation Training Center, Rehabilitation Virtual Simulation (VR) Training Center and Comprehensive Training Center of Psychology.


In the recent five years, the School has presided over or participated in more than 40 NSFC projects related to education of the disabled, rehabilitation, psychology and others, and more than 20 projects at provincial and ministerial level. Additionally, it has hosted or undertaken more than 20 high-level conferences and forums, such as the Talents Cultivation in Rehabilitation Medicine of China in the New Era International Summit Forum and the Annual Meeting of Special Education. Whats more, the School has established the Board of the School of Special Education and the Board of the School of Rehabilitation Medicine.


It actively explores the personalized cultivation system of higher education for the disabled and rehabilitation medicine, formulates the personalized cultivation scheme in a scientific way, which fully reflects the feature of the combined medical education, special education and rehabilitation education and seeks to provide multi-dimensional support for the disabled students. Up to now, it has cultivated more than 1,300 outstanding graduates with disability, making significant contributions to the development of medical and health care and rehabilitation in China.
