2023-07-20

On July 18, our school organized a visit and study trip for international students to the High-tech Branch of Yantai Affiliated Hospital, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) culture and experience TCM eye therapy.

During the event, Dr. Zhang Chunguang, head of the TCM Department at the High-tech Branch of Yantai Affiliated Hospital, explained the TCM treatment methods for eye strain in both Chinese and English. He also invited the international students to experience eye massage and walnut moxibustion therapy. The students unanimously expressed that the therapy was very comfortable and relaxing, and their vision felt brighter after the experience.

Through this activity, the international students experienced the profound depth of traditional Chinese culture and got a close-up feel for the charm of TCM. This has played a positive role in promoting TCM culture and advancing the internationalization of TCM.

Walnut moxibustion, also known as shell-isolated walnut moxibustion, is a relatively special type of traditional moxibustion therapy. It combines herbal steaming and moxibustion, and is often used to treat eye diseases. The Yellow Emperors Inner Canon mentions: The essence of the five zang and six fu organs all ascends to the eyes to become visual acuity. Walnut moxibustion first appeared in the Qing Dynasty and has been continuously improved over time. It involves using walnut shells soaked in pure herbal medicine liquid as an insulating material, filled with herbal mud and topped with moxa cones for moxibustion. The walnut shell, as an insulating material in moxibustion, effectively absorbs the medicinal properties of the moxa stick. Combined with the heat generated by the burning moxa, it promotes the volatilization of herbal medicine energy, which acts on acupoints around the eyes. This therapy has the effects of warming the meridians, promoting circulation, harmonizing qi and blood, balancing yin and yang, clearing and benefiting the head and eyes, as well as tonifying the liver and kidneys.
